Scotland County Fire Department To Host 2003 Demolition Derby

When there is a motor-vehicle accident and the victims need help to get out of the wreckage they call the Scotland County Fire Department. These volunteers use a variety of extrication equipment to get the job done. One might say these guys are the local experts on car crashes so its fitting that each year this same group, the Scotland County Fire Department, puts on one of the most popular shows of the annual Scotland County Fair with the Demolition Derby.

This year the demo derby will be held Saturday evening, July 5 at 7:00 p.m. Entrants will be asked to check in their cars between 4:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. at the pit entrance to the race track. The fire department has established the following rules for the 2003 no-weld demolition derby:

ENTRIES – NO Checks – All cash transactions

1. $25 deposit on car refunded if the vehicle is removed from the fairgrounds no later than 10:00 a.m. Sunday, July 6th.

2. $25 entry fee, which includes the car and driver.

3. $10 pit pass for all non-drivers. Limit four passes per car.

DRIVER / PIT AREA RULES

1. If under 18 years of age, you must have written consent of a parent or guardian to drive.

2. Due to insurance reasons, no one under 14 years of age will be allowed in the pit area.

3. No alcoholic beverages in the pit area. Coolers and vehicles will be checked. No exceptions.

4. No vehicles are allowed in the pit area prior to 4:00 p.m.

5. Inspections end at 6:30 p.m. No entries will be allowed after this time.

6. No drinking of alcoholic beverages in front of judges or during vehicle inspections.

AUTOMOBILE and RACING REGULATIONS

1. All glass, chrome, headlights, and signals must be removed before entering the track. Windshields may be left in for driver protection. If windshield is removed, the car must have a driver’s side protection bar.

2. Lap and shoulder belt required.

3. Helmet and face shield or goggles required.

4. Original gas tank must be removed from car. A gas tank (six gallon maximum capacity) must be secured and covered in the back seat area.

5. Bumper height may be no more than 24 inches from bottom of the bumper to the ground. No sharp edges on the bumper.

6. Battery must be relocated inside of car, secured and covered.

7. Upper portion of rear seat must be in place for safety reasons. All holes in fire walls must be covered with sheet metal.

8. Radiator must be stock and in stock position. No auxiliary water coolers. No transmission coolers inside of driver’s compartment.

9. Motor can be chained or tied down. No welding.

10. All doors must be secured. Only driver’s door, windshield protection bar and hood bolts may be welded.

11. No roll bars, extra body suspension reinforcing. Driver’s door can be reinforced on the inside for driver’s protection. Reinforcing may not be more than eight inches longer than the door itself. No floating cages.

12. Maximum 15 inch tires and wheels. Must be car wheels.

13. Trunk area must be viewable for inspection. It can be wired, chained or bolted shut.

14. Hoods must have (2) six inch holes for fire protection. Hoods must be secured in a manner to allow them to open for inspection. Bolts or threaded rod may be 4-8 inches long and 1/2 inch to 1 inch in diameter. If hood is removed, the fan must also be removed for safety reasons.

15. A number will be required on the doors and roof of the car. If there is not a number, one will be assigned to the car.

16. No unapproved gasoline containers will be allowed in the pits. Containers holding gasoline must be labeled gasoline.

17. Transmission must be covered except for shifter hole. No excessive holes.

18. Fenders may be rolled or trimmed. No bolting or welding on the fenders.

19. Body bushings must remain in stock position. No extra bolts from the body to the frame.

20. No driving out of bounds will be allowed.

21. All cars are subject for re-inspection at any time during the event.

22. No member of the Volunteer Fire Department will be complained to about anything before, during or after the event. Please write your complaints down and submit them to the department for consideration of the rules committee. Remember these men are volunteering their time to this community project.
